Data & Research

One of the basic operating premises of the Office of Substance Abuse is that its work be guided by objective data. OSA gathers data from multiple sources to inform planning and resource allocation decisions.

Surveillance Programs

• The Treatment Data System (TDS) collects de-identified client information from substance abuse treatment agencies.
• The Safe and Drug Free Schools and Communities Act (SDFSCA) Data Collection System collects information on incidences of prohibitive behavior from schools. (Data & Research will not be involved in this program after the spring of 2008; the 2008-9 data will be collected directly by the Maine Department of Education through the Maine Educational Data Management System, MEDMS.)
• The Maine Youth Drug and Alcohol Use Survey (MYDAUS) collects substance use information as well as risk and protective factor information from Maine's 6 th through 12 th graders. In 2009, the MYDAUS will be replaced by the Maine Integrated Youth Health Survey , which covers a broader range of topics.
• The Community Epidemiology Surveillance Network identifies troubling trends of substance use/abuse in Maine to help guide prevention, intervention, and treatment planning.
• The Prescription Monitoring Program is a public health tool created to prevent and detect prescription drug misuse and diversion.

• 2007 OSA Annual Report (PDF) presents the annual budget along with program descriptions and results.
• The Cost of Alcohol and Drug Abuse in Maine, 2005 (Word) (PDF) estimates the economic costs resulting from the affects of substance abuse on crime, morbidity, mortality, and medical care with a comparison to the cost of treatment.
• 2004 Maine General Population Drug and Alcohol Use Survey (Full Report (PDF - 1 mb)) (Summary (PDF 150 kb)) evaluates the prevalence of alcohol and drug use among Maine residents aged 18-64, and measures the impact of substance use on workplace performance.
