Data & ResearchOne of the basic operating premises of the Office of Substance Abuse is that its work be guided by objective data. OSA gathers data from multiple sources to inform planning and resource allocation decisions. Surveillance Programs in Brief
Community Epidemiology Surveillance Network (CESN)The purpose of the CESN is to facilitate the early identification of troubling trends in substance abuse, so that intervention and treatment programs can be implemented with maximum impact. A second goal of the CESN is to follow progress toward the Strategic Prevention Framework State Incentive Grant (SPF SIG) prevention priorities of underage drinking, high-risk drinking among 18-25 year olds, and misuse of prescription drugs among 18-25 year olds. Besides OSA, agencies contributing data to the CESN include the Maine Center for Disease Control, the Maine Department of Public Safety, the Northern New England Poison Center, and the federal Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration.
