Reconnecting Youth Summer Institute
Reconnecting Youth is a semester long class for students
who are at-risk for several problematic behaviors including dropping
out, substance abuse, and suicide. Designed as a skill building
support group, sometimes called a personal growth class, the class
needs to be small (no more than 12 students per group) and facilitated
by a caring staff person. The staff person also needs to be trained
in the Reconnecting Youth model. Results include:
- Significant increases in GPA and attendance
- A 60% decrease in hard drug use
- Stronger self-confidence
- Decreases in acts of aggression and suicide
- Decreased stress, depression, and anger
- More positive, connected relationships with teachers,
friends, and family than students in the control group
